Environmental Disasters

GEO-PICTURES builds on proven results and achievements from actions in several other space-focused research programs, both in the framework of EU and ESA . There is clear focus on a useful practical solution in the development and demonstration of value-added services meeting GMES user needs. Two significant advantages of GEO-PICTURES are important in light of the objectives:

Clear user driven project with the root in requirements from global humanitarian disaster management, civil protection and global environmental disaster management.
Field-proven concept in the framework of the International Humanitarian Partnership (IHP) with United Nations and EU Civil Protection.

Since the project is user driven, validation GEO-PICTURES in real use case situations is of highest priority in the project. The project itself builds on the successful trials of the ASIGN (Adaptive System for Image communications in Global networks) concept with United Nations and EU Civil Protection in the large TRIPLEX 2008 exercise, organized by the International Humanitarian partnership (IHP). The scenarios in 2008 were large flooded areas and chemical disasters, and ASIGN was combined with KSAT GMES data by UNOSAT-UNITAR and a Rapid Mapping was performed for the purpose of the exercise.

ASIGN won a prestigious innovation price in Norway and the success of the concept has sparked a large interest in a broad community. In this project we will significantly expand the proven concept both in terms of functionally and in terms of operational integration. At the same time the flooding scenario of TRIPLEX will be extended to the use case of the Amazonas while expanding the integration of GEO-PICTURES with sensors, functions and actions needed to manage environmental hazards both in terms of prevention and surveillance in addition to a means for rapid response in case of damaging events . As such GEO-PICTURES will be useful as legal support for prevention of environmental crime.
