Brief description and previous relevant experience

Created by Law Number 2.783 in January 31, 2003. MISSION: Consolidate public science politic of innovation and technology on the State of Amazonas. MAIN OBJECTIVE: Design, induce and deploy scientific and technologies programs for the socio-economic development in a systematic way and integrating the "man, technology and nature" with the environment preservation. The SECT comprises three institutions linked: University of the State of Amazonas (UEA), Foundation of Support and Research of the Amazon (FAPEAM) and Center for Technological Education of Amazonas (Cetam).

The main focus of institutional SECT are the demands, induced or not, made by secretaries of state and local authorities, institutions of higher education and research, public or private productive sector, companies in the Industrial Pole of Manaus and the federal institutions based or with activities and scientific and technological programs. The structure of work is focused on a management plan composed of seven scientific and technological programs:

1 - Science and Technology for Development of Amazonas;

2 - Science and Technology Priority Areas in the Amazon;

3 - Regional Development and Biotechnology in the Amazon;

4 - Supporting the Industrial Pole of Manaus - PIM;

5 - Management of Science and Technology Policy in the Amazon;

6 - State Policy on Climate Change, Environmental Conservation and Sustainable Development of Amazonas; and,

7 - Networks of S & T. The SECT will also be supported by TELECOM, the Brazilian Telecom Association

Main tasks in project

With responsibility for the "lung of the Earth" in Amazonas with exceptional environmental challenges, a very large areas with broadly lacking communications infrastructure, the government of Amazonas represents a main environmental emergency and satellite communications user, global policy influencer and major decision maker.
The SECT will input to requirements for GEO-PICTURES, provide a link to all relevant use cases in Brazil and the Brazilian space agency INPE. The specific interests include surveillance and monitoring for emergency prevention and rapid response to flooding, fires and environmental crime.

The SECT will also coordinate regional activities and provide field trial and test teams. We also reaffirm our Government and Institutional interest is this important partnership for the development of the Scientifics and technologic programs of the optics processes and telecommunications of the State of Amazonas.
